- Parents divorced when he was young

- Later attended Columbia University in New York
- In 1924 he moved to Washington DC
- Published his first book of poetry TheWeary Blues
- Finished his education at the University of Pennsylvania
- Wrote many works of poetry till his death
- Poetry Known as Afro American Fragment, The Weary Blues, and The Negro Speaks of Rivers
- He would write about issues involving African American History
- What made him unique was he didn’t see himself as a victim
