KARAN THAPAR: You made your first mark not as a lawyer but as an actor.
When you were at St Stephens College, you acted in Shakespeare’s plays—like Richard III and Julius Caesar—and they gave you a nickname at the time. Do you remember it?
KAPIL SIBAL: ‘Kapilus Sibalus’, something like that.

It was fun. I spent most of my time doing many of the other extracurricular stuff, acting, and later on I went on to direct plays in the university. I directed plays in St Stephens, Delhi School of Economics, Miranda House, Lady Irwin.

KARAN THAPAR: So the theatrical element in you came out first?
KAPIL SIBAL: Yes, I have always loved theatre.
KARAN THAPAR: There’s a lovely story from that time that I’d like you to confirm.
I gather Brinda Karat was the belle of the university and you became the envy of colle
