Toshiro Mifune (三船 敏郎, Mifune Toshirō, 1 April 1920 – 24 December 1997) was a Japanese actor and producer.
The recipient of numerous awards and accolades over a lengthy career,[1][2] he is widely considered one of the greatest actors of all time.[3][4] A leading figure in the Japanese film industry, he often played hypermasculine characters and was noted for his commanding screen presence.[5]
Although he amassed more than 180 screen credits, Mifune is best known for his 16 collaborations with director Akira Kurosawa.
These collaborations included Kurosawa's critically acclaimed jidaigeki films such as Rashomon (1950), for which Mifune won the San Marco Golden Lion at the Venice Film
